Dancer Adopts an Extreme Diet, Eats Only Fruit, Reaches 22 Kilos and Dies

The story of Polish influencer Karolina Krzyżak has drawn renewed attention to the dangers of extreme dietary restriction after the 27-year-old was found dead in a hotel in Bali.

According to multiple reports, Krzyżak had gradually moved from veganism toward an extremely restrictive fruit-based diet, eventually consuming little beyond raw fruit. By the time of her death, she reportedly weighed only around 22 kilograms (about 49 pounds) and was suffering from severe malnutrition.

Her case has raised difficult questions about how restrictive eating patterns can become dangerous and why severe physical deterioration should never be mistaken for evidence of good health.

From Veganism to an Extremely Restrictive Diet

Reports say Krzyżak had developed an interest in veganism, yoga and natural-living practices while studying in the United Kingdom.

Over time, however, her approach to food reportedly became increasingly restrictive. She eventually followed a form of frugivorism, an eating pattern centered heavily or exclusively on fruit.

Fruit can certainly be part of a healthy diet. It provides carbohydrates, fiber and numerous vitamins and minerals.

The problem arises when an extremely limited selection of foods replaces the broad range of nutrients the body requires.

A diet consisting almost entirely of fruit can make it difficult to obtain sufficient protein, essential fats and several important vitamins and minerals.

Her Condition Became Increasingly Severe

According to reports from people who encountered Krzyżak in Bali, her physical condition had become alarming.

Hotel employees reportedly noticed that she appeared extremely frail and at one point needed assistance getting back to her room because she was too weak to walk on her own.

Staff members reportedly encouraged her to seek medical attention, but she declined.

Her deteriorating condition was eventually discovered after a friend became concerned because they could no longer reach her. Hotel personnel entered her room and found that she had died.

What Medical Findings Were Reported?

Reports citing information about the case say an autopsy found advanced osteoporosis and severe albumin deficiency.

Albumin is a major protein in the blood, and very low levels can be associated with serious nutritional or medical problems.

The reported osteoporosis was another indication of how severely her health had deteriorated.

Her extremely low body weight was also consistent with profound nutritional deprivation, although body weight alone cannot establish the cause of a person's death.

Why a Fruit-Only Diet Can Be Dangerous

The human body requires a combination of macronutrients and micronutrients.

Fruit can provide carbohydrates, fiber and various vitamins and minerals, but an exclusively fruit-based diet can make it difficult to obtain adequate amounts of:

  • Protein, which is essential for muscles and tissues

  • Essential fats, needed for numerous biological functions

  • Vitamin B12, which is generally not supplied naturally by plant foods

  • Iron and zinc, depending on the foods consumed

  • Calcium and vitamin D, both important for bone health

  • Adequate calories, particularly when food choices are very limited

The nutritional consequences become more serious when restriction continues for a prolonged period.

Severe malnutrition can affect muscles, bones, the immune system, the cardiovascular system and other organs.

The Difference Between Healthy Eating and Extreme Restriction

One important lesson from the case is that eating fruit is not the problem.

Fruit is a valuable component of a balanced diet.

The concern is eliminating most or all other food groups and believing that one category of food can provide everything the body needs.

Healthy nutrition is about adequacy and balance. A person can eat predominantly plant-based foods while still consuming a wide variety of vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds and other nutritionally appropriate foods.

People following vegan diets may also need fortified foods or supplements for nutrients such as vitamin B12.

When Healthy Habits Become Dangerous

Extreme diets can sometimes develop gradually.

A person may initially eliminate one food, then another, believing each restriction will improve health or appearance. Over time, the list of acceptable foods can become increasingly small.

Warning signs can include dramatic weight loss, persistent weakness, dizziness, fainting, intolerance to cold, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal from normal activities around food, or an intense fear of eating certain foods.

These symptoms deserve professional attention.

They should not simply be celebrated as evidence of “discipline” or a successful lifestyle.

A Tragic Reminder

Krzyżak's story has resonated because reports suggest that her restrictive eating pattern was closely connected with her beliefs about health and wellbeing.

That makes the case particularly important to discuss carefully. Extreme dietary restriction can be complicated, and people struggling with food, weight or body image may need support rather than criticism.

A person who is losing substantial weight unintentionally—or who is deliberately restricting food to the point of weakness—should seek help from a qualified healthcare professional.

The Bigger Lesson

The human body needs more than a single category of food.

Fruit can be nutritious and beneficial, but no extreme diet should be treated as a guaranteed path to health. When a dietary philosophy begins producing severe weight loss, weakness or other signs of physical deterioration, those symptoms are warning signs rather than achievements.

Karolina Krzyżak's death is a tragic reminder that nutrition is not simply about eating foods considered “natural” or “clean.” The body needs enough energy and a broad range of essential nutrients to survive and function.
