Breaking News: Major Fire Breaks Out as Emergency Crews Rush to the Scene
A major fire erupted at a restaurant building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on Saturday evening, sending thick smoke into the surrounding streets and triggering a massive emergency response.
The blaze broke out shortly before 5:30 p.m. at a building on North Fifth Street between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street. The building houses three restaurants, including Juliette, where firefighters initially encountered the flames.
Fire Quickly Escalates
What began as a restaurant fire rapidly became a four-alarm emergency.
According to the FDNY, more than 200 fire and emergency personnel responded as flames spread through areas between the ceiling and roof and into adjoining restaurant spaces. The affected restaurants were evacuated as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
At one point, firefighters faced a smoke explosion and a localized roof collapse, prompting a Mayday call and forcing crews to temporarily withdraw from part of the building.
Smoke could be seen rising above the Williamsburg neighborhood as firefighters battled the flames.
Firefighters Injured
The dangerous conditions resulted in injuries to six firefighters, according to CBS New York. The injuries were reported as minor, and the firefighters were taken to local hospitals for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
News 12 reported that four of the injured firefighters were transported to Woodhull Hospital, while another declined medical treatment.
The response continued for several hours before officials announced that the fire had been brought under control shortly after 8:30 p.m.
Neighbors Watch as Smoke Fills the Area
People in the surrounding neighborhood were confronted with heavy smoke as emergency crews flooded the area.
Witnesses described seeing a large cloud of smoke and flames coming from the restaurant. Nearby residents were advised to stay clear of the emergency operation while firefighters and other responders worked.
The incident also created concern about the building's structural condition. Department of Buildings personnel were called to the scene to assess the damage following the partial collapse.
Cause Remains Under Investigation
Although firefighters succeeded in containing the blaze, authorities have not yet determined what caused it.
